Director of Development
Title: Director of Development
Reports To: Chief Development Officer
Position Overview
The Chicago Urban League is seeking a full-time Director of Development to expand the efforts and capacity of the Development Team, ultimately leading to increased revenue for programs, initiatives, and the organization at large. The Director will help oversee and build relationships with institutional and individual donors and prospects to maximize financial contributions and help the Chicago Urban League achieve its strategic and organizational goals.
Responsibilities
- Team Expansion & Management

- Provide oversight and direction to current grants consultant, ensuring grant deliverables (e.g. reports and applications) are submitted in a timely manner
- Work with Chief Development Officer and HR to recruit, interview, hire, and onboard additional team members
- Coach, mentor, and develop staff to help empower the team and foster a spirit of teamwork
- Develop and regularly monitor goals to ensure team success and effectiveness
- Portfolio Oversight

- Maintain personal portfolio of mid-level individual and institutional funders
- Conduct regular prospect research to grow portfolio
- Liaise across departments and boards to identify, cultivate, and solicit funding prospects
- Collaborate with Chief Development Officer on future major gift strategy
- Development and implement an annual fund strategy to increase individual giving
- Strategic Initiatives

- Partner with Chief Development Officer on overall departmental strategy, including budgeting and goal setting, capacity building, events, funder management, and stakeholder relations
- Liaise with the Board of Directors (in partnership with the Chief Development Officer and President & CEO) and Auxiliary Boards (in collaboration with External Affairs Team) to activate around fundraising initiatives and opportunities
- Work with departments to vet opportunities for support and partnership
- Communications
- Ensure organizational and departmental goals and metrics are articulated in a clear and compelling manner
- Work collaboratively with Development and External Affairs Teams to occasionally author and regularly review development-related communications, including but not limited to: success stories, newsletter articles, print and digital appeals, and acknowledgement letters
Direct Reports
Responsible for the supervision of the current contract grant writer in addition to partnering with the Chief Development Officer on the future hire of an Institutional Giving Manager and an Individual Giving Manager.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 5-7 years of comparable experience working with institutional and individual donors
- Managerial experience preferred
- Meticulous record-keeping skills and detail-oriented approach
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high personal standards for the quality of output
- Strong critical-thinking skills, with the ability to understand high-level strategic objectives, as well as, the tactical details critical for their success
- Ability to solve problems independently and collaboratively, exercising good judgment while balancing competing priorities
- Ability to simultaneously manage short-term and long-term plan and goals
- Highly professional demeanor with the ability to work successfully with a wide array of constituents, including funding partners, board members, program staff, and other stakeholders
- Aptitude with Raiser’s Edge (or comparable CRM), Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
