University of the Potomac Partners with Chicago Urban League to Increase Access to Higher Education for African-American Youth

University Will Offer 2 Full-Tuition Scholarships a Year to its Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs

(CHICAGO) University of the Potomac is proud to announce the launch of a new partnership with the Chicago Urban League that aims to increase access to higher education for youth who participate in the League’s programs.

The Chicago Urban League serves more than 1,300 middle school and high school students a year through programs that address a range of needs—from providing socioemotional support and helping to improve academic performance to preparing students for success in college or in the workforce.

Beginning this year, University of the Potomac will offer two Chicago Urban League students full-tuition-paid scholarships in any one of its online bachelor’s degree programs, said Andrea Ford, Chief Operations Officer for University of the Potomac.  During the year, the students will have the opportunity to transfer to any of the approved on-ground campuses.

The University offers bachelor’s degrees in accounting, business, computer science, cyber security, data analytics, government contract management, healthcare information management, hospitality and tourism management, and international business.

The Chicago Empowerment Scholarship, which includes four years of tuition and fees in a bachelor’s program and an initial $200 book voucher, will be offered to two Chicago Urban League students annually.

“We are honored to help in furthering the education of the community served by the Chicago Urban League. Since 1991 to present, University of the Potomac has been providing educational opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate level, leading to career enhancement by offering affordable and accessible education,” Ford added.  “The University is excited to share in this joint effort with the Chicago Urban League as a sure way to promote academic success for the many young and deserving future leaders of tomorrow!”

The University of the Potomac will also offer the Chicago Achievers Scholarship, which will award $1,000 per year to Chicago Urban League students who meet eligibility requirements.

The partnership also includes professional development for League staff and seminars for League clients.

“The cost of tuition is a barrier to higher education for many students and contributes to racial disparities in attainment of college degrees,” said Chicago Urban League President and CEO Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We are incredibly grateful to the University of the Potomac for stepping up to help remove these barriers and provide a pathway for young people to build a better future for themselves and their families.”

Students who take part in any of the programs offered by the Chicago Urban League’s Center for Student Development and its Human Capital Center will be eligible for consideration for the scholarships. Scholarship selection criteria will be available to participating students by April 2020.
